Eyeball
Now, this is a really old project – my bachelors thesis – from the spring of 2000. It was a project for Ericsson, back then a major handset maker. The promise of 3G networking was all the hype in telecoms, but it's introduction was still some ways of. The first iPhone, revolutionizing the use of touch screes, wasn't introduced until 7 years later.
The Eyeball interface was a way to try to gain both focus and extended peripheral vision on a small screen, based on presenting information on virtual spheres. With the 20/20 vision of hind site, I think going for bigger screens was a better way, but the prevailing trend at the time was for ever smaller phones, and at this size, it might have had it's benefits.
If you're serious about vintage touch screen interfaces, and you can run Windows, here's your chance to geek out: Download this Director presentation where you can try the spherical interface, including writing with the text ball!
Please excuse all the rotating bling. It could have been much worse...
